Lower Than The Angels
My early years were spent in a house surrounded by trees. Blue jays fluttered amongst the branches of a great beech tree and foxes would appear with their young at the end of a long sweep of grass leading down to a lake. With my father, I explored the woodland around our house. He shared what seemed to me and encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world, in the manner of all great teachers, I learned to learn without seeming to do so.
Autumn is my favourite time, the colours, the berries and fruits, fungi and carpets of leaves, inspire me to record their glory in artwork and photographs. I am lucky enough to live beside the Lagan Meadows, a nature reserve right in the heart of Belfast, which you enter through the ‘kissing gate’ around the corner. The dogs and I walk there everyday and I find it a constant source of delight and wonder.
Working as an artist and an illustrator allows me to draw on a number of passions, my love of books, particularly the picture books of my early childhood, narrative poetry and poems celebrating nature, the paintings that have surrounded me since childhood and the inspiration I have drawn from the great works in the many museums and art galleries in the cities I
