Simone Karl

Place of Birth: A small village in the south of Germany.

Currently Living in: Hamburg, Germany.

Train, bus, bike, or other? Scooter, bike and walking. These are the best ways to explore cities.

What’s the most important object in your studio? My scalpels and blades.

Paper or Plastic? Definitely Paper. For my collages I am working with photos, magazine, books and for my big paper sculptures I am working with coloured paper.

Favourite Project you have produced so far? For my graduate project, I made a collage book project about the psyche of man. I still like this project very much because it has a disturbing and deep aura.

What are you working on right now? I’m working on a large installation that deals with the fine line between disgust and pleasure to the human body.

Favourite Food? Rice pudding and sun-dried tomatoes. But not together.

Coffee or tea? Chai tea.

What’s your earliest creative memory? When I was 6 years old, I built a ship of paper with small furniture in the below deck for my aunt. She still has this ship. One day I am going to build a second ship.

How do you prefer to spend your mornings? I’m sitting outside in the grass and wait shivering for the sunrise until the sun warms me. Meanwhile I am drinking tea. This is like refueling with pure energy.
