Rick Hyde

After completing a degree in Graphic Art & Design in Leeds, Rick Hyde returned to his home city of Manchester in search of a career in the creative industry. Armed with a love of all things design, and a keen interest in illustration and animation, Rick contemplated which creative field he should pursue.

It wasn’t long before fate intervened, and he was offered a digital designer role at a boutique Manchester agency. A successful career followed, in which Rick collaborated in award winning teams and gained exposure in leading design showcases.

A year into his working life, Rick found a creative outlet for another of his passions, music. Shortly after forming a 60s garage rock band, Rick turned his hand to song writing. Over the following years, his band played in festivals across Europe and released a single on a small independent label.

In recent years, after the band drifted amicably into a sabbatical, Rick found himself returning to illustration and animation as a means to express himself creatively. He now works as a creative freelancer, using the time in between projects to develop his illustrative style and animation skills.

Music remains a constant in his life and a major influence in his illustration. Rick aims to combine the tight geometric principles he developed as a designer with a psychedelic aesthetic. Contemporary sources of inspiration include Superflat specialists, such as Josh Brill and Cape Town’s thriving independent Design Studios, Muti and Radio. Looking further afield 1960s music, art and children’s television, for example Trumpton and The Magic Roundabout, also play a part in forming Rick’s illustrative style.
